Our commitment

Africa Future Gateway, Inc. is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We believe that access to education, programs, and opportunity should not depend on ability, geography, or device.

We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards to our website www.africafuturegateway.org, our future Digital Academy (learn.africafuturegateway.org), and our participant portal (portal.africafuturegateway.org).

Accessibility is a design requirement at AFG, not a retrofit — it is considered at every stage of planning, design, development, and content creation.

Conformance status

Target standard

WCAG 2.2 Level AA

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

Our website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. “Partially conformant” means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard. We document these areas in Section 06 (Known limitations) below and are actively working to resolve them.

We aim to reach full conformance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA on all core pages — Home, About, Programs, Impact, Partners, Get Involved, Donate, Contact, Transparency, and all legal pages — and will document any exceptions that cannot be feasibly remediated.

Measures we take

Africa Future Gateway takes the following measures to ensure accessibility:

Standards-based design

Semantic HTML, ARIA landmarks, and clear heading hierarchy across every page.

Contrast-tested palette

All text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for body, 3:1 for large text).

Keyboard navigation

Every interactive element is reachable and operable via keyboard with visible focus states.

Captions & transcripts

Video and audio content include captions or transcripts where applicable.

Responsive from 360px

Layouts work on small phones and large screens without horizontal scrolling.

Performance-conscious

Compressed images, lazy loading, and limited third-party scripts for low-bandwidth users.

Bilingual-ready

English/French architecture with language switching that preserves page context.

Continuous testing

Automated testing plus manual review with assistive technologies before release.

Known limitations

Despite our best efforts, some limitations may exist. Below is a transparent list of known accessibility limitations and our plan for each.

Under review

Third-party embedded content

Some embedded content — such as donation processor frames or analytics widgets — may not meet all WCAG criteria. We choose accessible vendors where possible and document exceptions.

In progress

Video captions & transcripts

New video content is published with captions and transcripts. Older media published before this statement may not yet have them; retroactive captioning is ongoing.

Under review

Document downloads (PDF)

Some PDFs in the Transparency center may not be fully tagged for screen-reader use. We are working to publish accessible alternatives (HTML or tagged PDFs) for all governance documents.

Planned

Digital Academy & Portal

The future LMS and participant portal will be built to the same WCAG 2.2 AA standard. Full audits will be conducted before public launch.

If you encounter an accessibility barrier not listed here, please let us know — we treat every report seriously.

Getting assistance

If you need help accessing content on our website, or would like information in an alternative format, we are happy to assist. You can contact us to:

Request a document in an alternative format (large print, HTML, plain text)

Receive assistance over the phone for completing forms or navigating the site

Ask questions about our programs, donations, or partnership opportunities

Assessment approach

Africa Future Gateway assesses the accessibility of our website through the following approaches:

S

Self-evaluation

Internal reviews by our design and development team at every stage of the product lifecycle.

A

Automated tools

Regular audits with axe, Lighthouse, and WAVE to catch regressions.

M

Manual review

Keyboard-only navigation, screen-reader testing, and contrast verification by the team.

U

User feedback

Reports from users with disabilities inform our accessibility roadmap directly.

Formal third-party accessibility audits will be commissioned prior to the public launch of the Digital Academy and Portal, and periodically for the main website as our content evolves.

Enforcement & escalation

We take accessibility seriously. If you are not satisfied with our response to an accessibility concern, you have the following options:

  • Escalate your concern in writing to our team at wecare@africafuturegateway.org with “Accessibility escalation” in the subject line.
  • Request a formal response from AFG leadership, which we will provide in writing within 15 business days.
  • Lodge a complaint with the relevant accessibility enforcement body in your jurisdiction (for example, the U.S. Department of Justice ADA Information Line, or the equivalent authority in your country).

AFG will never retaliate against anyone who raises an accessibility concern in good faith.
